In case any of you are unfamiliar with the Broken Windows theory, let me recap it for you. If a window in a building is broken and left unrepaired, all the rest of the windows will soon be broken. The Broken Windows Theory is based on the notion that signs of neighborhood disorder, such as broken windows, litter and derelict vehicles, can lead to disorder and lawlessness. The theory, penned by James Wilson and criminologist George Kelling, further explores the ideas that community disorder signals that the community does not care, and without care, there is no respect for the neighborhood. Therefore, it is essential to keep litter out of neighborhoods, rid areas of graphitti and keep buildings up to code.
This theory is adopted in many cities across the US, including North Charleston, and is now evident in Tokyo. Check out this article for more details.
